what to do?

The exterior of our house is a mish-mash of paint colours. Blue, navy, white, cream and yellow. Plus our now sanded and oiled decks, and five wooden french doors.
I've begun the big job of painting our verandah railing white (if this wind ever stops I may one day finish!), but we can't decide what to do with the doors. They were varnished, but it has mostly worn away.
Our options
a-sand and revarnish in a natural tone
b-sand and paint in white to match the windows and new railings

I'm planning on recovering the outdoor furniture in a white/natural colour.

Please excuse the mostly old photos-I haven't taken many new ones, and our front verandah is currently a mess due to being mid paint!
Our nice new deck floors-they all look like this now!
The next photo shows the front verandah from the street-you can see how faded the left hand door is, compared to the open interior side. Would it be too much white? Or would it just make sense, and match the rest of the house?
The back verandah-one white door next to another set of doors

Top verandah
What do you think? Keep them wood, or paint them white?

  1. I think I would paint them white to match the rest of the doors and windows. Louise

  2. We just had a heap of new windows and doors made for our renovation. They are constructed from Kwila and are beautifully made. They look so good that I was tempted to just oil them, but traditionally Queenslanders have painted doors and windows so we will paint them to keep with tradition and also to save on future maintenance. When they are oiled, they need to be sanded and redone almost every year (depending on how much sun/rain they get.) So I will say paint them to save yourself time and money. xx

  5. I don't think you can go wrong either way - both would look stunning. Not very helpful sorry... What's your first instinct Ness? I often find that's the one I always come back to. Nicole xx

  6. Its such a tough decision! I never noticed the difference in wooden doors and white window frames until I had to make the same decision recently. I ended up keeping my french doors timber but I painted the frame white so that it kind of matched in with the white window frames around it. Im sure whatever you do will look great :)

    1. It's funny how you notice until you do! Our frames are really narrow-like 10mm on the outside, with full frames on the inside painted white, so I don't think that would work. Hmmm... x

  7. I vote white, definitely! My whole house is white, with charcoal window frames and doors. So I don't believe in too much white ;-)

  8. If I tell you to do wood- are you a little bit disappointed? If that's the case then go white. x

  9. Well, I figure you can use the colors you want, as long as you can harmonize them. White seems an elegant choice, but is kind of obvious and oft-repeated. The navy blues at the porch is fine. You really just have to do something about the roofing grids that sort of stand out in a way that they seem unfinished, in ways that do not clash with the dominant colors so much and that isn't too similar to the hues of wood. Then again, maybe you can renovate the exteriors from the ground up. Not that there's anything wrong with the previous set up, but that may open up color options we may not have previously contemplated. It comes with the form.

    1. Eventually we will paint the roof beams, either white or navy. We originally had 5 exterior colours, we will take it back to 3. x

  10. If you’re really set on white, then I say go for it! Then maybe give the hardwood a darkwood stain so that it contrasts nicely with the white exterior and railings. That would definitely look gorgeous.

    1. You must have missed the next post-we went white, and love it. It's really brightened it up, and looks 'right'. It just fits, and is also traditional too, which probably swung the vote. Thanks for the imput-the stain would have look good too! x
